Bali Blue Coffee: The Origin Story of Indonesia's Most Exotic Cup
Nestled between volcanic mountains and ancient rice terraces, Bali produces one of the world's most distinctive coffees — and once you taste it, you'll understand why.
Where Bali Blue Comes From
Bali Blue Moon coffee is grown in the highlands of Kintamani, a volcanic region in the northern part of Bali, Indonesia. Sitting at elevations between 1,200 and 1,700 meters above sea level, the Kintamani plateau benefits from rich volcanic soil, cool mountain air, and a microclimate that's ideal for slow-ripening coffee cherries.
The name "Blue Moon" refers to the bluish-green hue of the raw, unroasted beans — a characteristic unique to this region's growing conditions and processing methods.
How It's Grown
Bali Blue is grown using a traditional subak system — a centuries-old Balinese cooperative irrigation method that's so culturally significant it's been recognized by UNESCO. Coffee plants are often intercropped with citrus, passion fruit, and vegetables, which contributes to the coffee's naturally complex, fruit-forward flavor profile.
Most Bali Blue is wet-hulled (a process called Giling Basah), which gives it a heavier body and lower acidity compared to washed coffees from Africa or Latin America.
What It Tastes Like
Bali Blue is known for its:
- Full, syrupy body — rich and coating on the palate
- Low acidity — smooth and easy-drinking, even for sensitive stomachs
- Flavor notes — dark chocolate, earthy spice, hints of tropical fruit and cedar
- Long, clean finish — no bitterness, just depth
It's a coffee that rewards slow mornings. Pour it black and let it breathe.
